Do you want to go to a land where time has stood still?
Jellurgal is a magical mountain that has remained the same as it was thousands of years ago.
Jellurgal used to be the stage for traditional Aboriginal ceremonies and corrobrees.
Learn more about the region’s Aboriginal History by going to the Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre.
The Centre offers insight and knowledge into one of the oldest living cultures in the world - the Yugambeh Aboriginal people. Be prepared to meet a traditional land owner and listen to the dreamtime stories related to the creation of the Jellurgal mountain.
Know how life was like in the bush and how fishing, hunting was done by Yugambeh people for thousands of decades.
When you go on a guided tour, expect to witness countless culturally significant sites such as an ancient midden – these are mounds that store remains of marine animals and shellfish gathered by Aboriginal people. These discarded shells now reach up to more than 50 metres in height and more than a metre in depth.
Go on a Jellurgal Dreaming Tour! This tour includes an overview of the Gold Coast’s Aboriginal history. See Australian native wildlife such as koalas, kangaroos, crocodiles and brolgas in their natual habitat. The second part of the tour allows travelers to participate in an ancient smoking ceremony and ochre anointment to be performed by local Yugambeh tribe members. The trek is 60 minutes long and includes lunch and refreshments.
You can also go on a Jellurgal Journey half-day tour that starts at 11am. It includes a live Aboriginal dance and traditional fire starting demonstration. Travelers will discover sites used by the Yugambeh people. See the traditional life of Yugambeh people and witness the tour’s highlight: `The Creation of Jellurgal.’
If you want to go on a private tour of Yugambeh Country, you can have a personalised tour (as long as you are a group of seven people or less). The `On Country Tour’ allow travelers to visit an ancient burial ground. The tour concludes with an Aboriginal themed lunch.
Entry to the Centre is free. The Jellurgal Aboriginal Centre is located at 1711 Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh Heads 4220 and is a quick drive from our Gold Coast Family Resort.
The Centre is open 8am from Monday to Saturday, and 9am on Sundays.
